Can Your Dog See?
Because you care about your dog's well-being, your dog is living a healthier and happier life. Your dog is an important member of the family. He eats well. He is exercised regularly. What do you do when your dog ages and his sight deteriorates
Keep Your Dog Safe
Have you noticed your dog is stumbling, or knocking into furniture? Your dog's vision may be impaired. Dogs become blind due to old age, cataracts, diabetes, or genetic diseases.
To help your dog overcome his disability, create pathways by using rugs on the floor. Once your dog becomes accustomed to these props, he will be able to negotiate his way around the house. When your dog is completely blind he will not falter as he makes his way from room to room.
Try to avoid changing the layout of your furniture. Your dog shares many human traits, so he will remember the layout of a room and know where it is safe to walk. Do not leave children's toys in the dog's pathway, as he may trip on something he is not expecting to find in his way.
You cannot always be at home to watch your dog. When you are away from home, it is important you keep your dog safe. If you own a swimming pool, make sure the dog cannot get into the pool area. Build fences, or barricades, to prevent your dog from going into dangerous areas in your backyard.
Keep Your Dog Interested in Life
Do not stop exercising your pet once he cannot see. Many blind dogs gain weight because of lack of exercise. The dog may become bored and eat more food.
Take your pet for walks on a lead. If your dog seems anxious on a normal lead, purchase a "stiff" lead or a harness for your dog. This will give you more control when you are walking your dog.
If your dog suffers from cataracts, you can purchase goggles that are made especially for dogs. Bright lights can cause problems for dogs with cataracts. The goggles will help your dog cope with bright lights when he is on his walk.
You can purchase treat dispensing toys that will keep your dog amused for hours. If you offer these toys to your dog on a regular basis, remember to cut down the amount of food you offer him in his food bowl.
It is not difficult to help your dog adjust to his inability to see. Make sure you keep him safe from unseen dangers. Give him plenty of exercise and attention and he will continue to lead a happy life.
